Ohev Shalom Congregation

Today, All Creatures of the World
Stand in Judgement.
(Shofar Prayer)
Elul is the Month of Mercy and Penitence. The first ten days of Tishrei are the Days of Judgment. Our Creator’s sovereignty is then brought forth to manifest judgment for all creation.
The days of judgment evoke an awesome concern in all of us, as we hopefully anticipate a favorable result. As in earthly court functions, so is the procedure in the heavenly tribunal. We are faced with a prosecutor against us and we have a defender standing by us.
We pray: Silence the prosecutor and may the defender replace him (Kol Nidre Prayer).
Much more time and effort is spent in the preparation of a case in advance of the tribunal than in the arguing and pleading in court before the judge.
